It is highly important to understand the healthcare system at the local level to properly plan and implement evidence-based practice (EBP). The community’s needs must be evaluated and to address these needs resources are needed at the local level, these include adequate funding. For health care systems to improve health quality, outcomes, cost, and equity there needs to be a process for transmitting new knowledge into everyday care (White & Schmidler, 2017). Planning also includes understanding the staffing required and availability at the local level to successfully care out the implementation such as well-educated, competent, and trained nurses, physicians as well as other professionals that will facilitate the implementation of the new evidence-based practice. If the community acknowledges there is a problem and is willing to address it, this means there is a want to implement new EBP and the process will be much smoother.
My change project is on increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates and duration to at least six months of a newborn’s life. To do so, education is vital. Educating the community which includes the parents, nurses and physician about this evidence-based practice and the WHO’s requirements would be important. The clinic also needs to understand barriers to exclusively breastfeeding. These barriers can include interprofessional factors, community factors, organizational factors, and policy factors as well as individual factors (Snyder, et al., 2021). If we truly want to implement EBP we must understand our surroundings and where education is needed. By educating our labor and delivery nurses as well as they physicians at prenatal clinics about the importance of breastfeeding and the resources this clinic offers can increase patient awareness. Evidence based practice shows that a lack of breastfeeding support is directly correlated to early termination of breastfeeding.
