Hi Professor and Class,
The correct answer would be option E (2Na(s) + F2(g) → 2NaF(s)) for this week’s question. Dental fluoride rinse is used in dental offices to help prevent cavities and to protect the dental health of the patient. Dentists need to understand the formula/ equation of making the dental fluoride for their patients because if there are any mistakes or the formula is off the reaction can become negative and actually cause damage to the teeth instead. If the dentist is going to mix these chemicals and create a rinse then he needs to be aware of all these elements. In reading about dental fluoride I also learned that the version you are given for treatment in the office is stronger than over the counter rinse you can buy.

I believe B. Na(s) + F(g)→NaF(s) properly represents sodium fluoride because it is made up of sodium (Na+) which is a cation, and fluoride (F-), which is an anion, combining these two makes NaF(s) (SoftSchools, n.d.). However, to balance this chemical equation, I believe E. 2Na(s)+F2(g)→2NaF(s) properly represents the balanced chemical equation for this reaction because there were initially two fluorines on the left side, so I will add the number 2 to the right side to balance it, but since fluorine has a subscript that can’t be changed. I will write coefficient 2 in front of Na on the right side and add 2 sodiums on the left side to balance it. Furthermore, it is essential to understand this equation because it is commonly used in the dentistry profession. Sodium fluoride is used to strengthen one’s enamel and avoid cavities (WebMD, n.d.). If this is incorrect, I think there is no way to discover information about the relationship between products and reactants.
