Assessment 5:Geologic StructuresTOTAL POINTS: 75DescriptionStructural geology is the study of the ways in which rocks or sediments are arranged and deformed. Sedimentary processes deposit sediment in horizonal lines and time and pressure turn these sedimentary structures into rock. Stress can deform these rocks into interesting shapes. The shapes that the rocks take is called strain. Most of the work of structural geology is learning to “read” the stress and strain history of rock units by looking at shapes, patterns, and features.
Instructions: You will need to examine the image below, download the image file then follow the steps below.
1. Draw the rock layer contacts which should show a geologic structure as black lines
2. Draw hinge plane(s) as a red line
3. Post the image and describe:
a. What kind of structure it is (what is the name)
b. Why do these kinds of structures existYou will need to supply two media sources that support your answer to #3. Peer Review AssignmentFor this portion of the assignment, you will be reading the original work of two of your classmates and then writing a response in their discussion thread and using the rubric provided in this document to evaluate their work. You will be assigned to groups for each assessment, and you will be reviewing the other member’s work
. As you are doing your evaluation, please remember that this is peer review. No one in this class is an expert so please do not make assumptions that the person whose work you are reading knows more about the subject than you. As you are reading their original work, remember that the person writing it is a human. Give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are talking about and have authority to discuss the issues they are discussing. Be courteous and don’t be too critical; your feedback to the author is graded and will not be anonymous.
