Write a short 2-page paper discussing one of the films. You will watch the film on your own time and use course concepts and theories to analyze & explain the film. Include a very brief synopsis of the film (less than a paragraph). The bulk of the paper will be devoted to discussing the ideas, concepts, and theories we’ve covered in class.
Papers must cite (but not quote at great length) at least one passage from a relevant reading that supports your response(s) to the film. This can be a reading from class or an outside source, but cite it properly. This will help you get into the practice of citing your sources that will be required for the final paper.
Remember that you will need to define each concept, term, idea or theory that you use and link it explicitly to the film you viewed.
NOTE: If you have already seen one of these films it is OK to use it for this paper, but you might get more out of this assignment if you watch a film you haven’t seen before.
The issues to address in your paper are:
8-10 aspects of deviance portrayed in the movie. Why do the elements of the film you selected count as deviance?
In your opinion, what were the most serious deviant acts depicted in the film? What were the least serious deviant acts? Why?
Which, if any, of the deviant acts were crimes?
Who was the most deviant character in the film? The least deviant? Why?
How are the deviant acts reacted to or addressed in the film? Do you think the characters demonstrated an appropriate reaction to the deviant acts? How might you have acted differently? Why? What are some non-deviant approaches that characters could have used in the film?
Which theory of deviance is most evident in this film? Explain. That is, what is the cause of these deviant behaviors?
While writing your paper, you must include and correctly use all 5 of the following concepts. Be sure to put the terms in bold so that I can easily identify them. It is not enough to just define the concepts in the paper. You need to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts by applying them to situations in the film.
Deviance
Crime
Social control
Norm
