While Daisy Miller can be read as travel story, a comedy of manners, or a failed

April 26, 2024

While Daisy Miller can be read as travel story, a comedy of manners, or a failed love story, it is ultimately the story of a young man who lives in his head: we understand who Frederick is by analyzing his thinking.
Create a 3-part essay analyzing Winterbourne’s thinking. Each part uses the “Quote Sandwich” (strategy) Adios (184-92)—with an effective set-up and follow-up—to analyze and support views of the protagonist as a thinker.
1. Who is Frederick Winterbourne Analysis Sandwich:
Revise your Mini Analysis 6/7 that analyzes the word choice, structure, and content of a quotation of Winterbourne’s thoughts to draw deep inferences about who he is.
2. Winterbourne as Critical Thinker Support Sandwich:
Add a second quote sandwich to your Mini Analysis 8 claiming that in other parts of the story Winterbourne does NOT possess the same critical thinking trait that you already argued that he does possess.  Transition to the next part with something like, “However, in other parts of the story Winterbourne does not possess this same trait.”
3. In-class Support Sandwich:  More details TBA.
Transitions:  Rather than connecting the three sections with more traditional transitions, use “Captions,” (Adios 199-205) a kind of subtitle, for each section.
Quote Management:  This essay requires using 3 different quotes and follows MLA formatting for citations and blocking longer quotes; and follows “Quote Sandwich” (Adios 184-92) management with an effective set-up and follow-up.
Final Editing: Title your essay and format according to MLA formatting. Revise your essay with flow and pause and edit for grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling issues; also attach a “Works Cited” list with Daisy Miller and Adios and the critical thinking traits.
