Both of the articles in the second set of readings on organizational processes in social movements (Polletta, Freeman) raise critical questions about what can be done in order to address the concerns raised by skeptics of the formalization of
SMOs (e.g. Matthews). Freeman fears that groups who see themselves as “structureless” are unaccountable, while Polletta suggests that organizations don’t just reflect efficiency but reflect cultural values and ideals alongside strategic concerns. Considering each of these sets of authors, which
