Which, if any, of the three principles from the Belmont Report were violated in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study?

June 23, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

Discussion 1
Can you think of any cases in history that have raised ethical questions about how human beings have been treated? Unfortunately, maltreatment of human participants during and after World War II raised serious concerns about the work of some scientists and the types of experiments they were conducting.
In 1978, the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research created The Belmont Report, an important and enduring document which provided ethical guidelines for research involving humans.
According to the Belmont Report, responsible research with human subjects must adhere to three key principles: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Review the learning resources for Discussion 13. These include information about two notorious experiments that were carried out with human subjects. Answer the questions that follow.
1. Which, if any, of the three principles from the Belmont Report were violated in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study? Explain your response.
2. Which, if any, of the three principles from the Belmont Report were violated in the Milgram Experiment? Explain your response.
3. Are there any instances in which unethical research on human subjects might be justified? Explain your response. If you provide an example from history, provide citations as appropriate.
When writing your posts, it is very important that you focus not just on summary but also on analysis. These posts are how I determine your mastery of the material and your critical thinking. Remember:

• Make sure you start your initial post as a New Thread in the LEO Discussion board, or I might not find it when I grade.
• Your first paragraph needs to be an introduction to your post.
• Your final paragraph should be a conclusion which pulls your ideas together.
• Your middle paragraphs should discuss your arguments.
• All posts need to be written in APA style and cite resources. You are encouraged to draw on resources from your courses across your entire major. There is not a lot of new information learned in this course, as I want to see you bringing together all of what you have learned at school.
• Please check your post against the Guide for Good Writing before you submit it, as points will be deducted if you make those common writing errors. (This document is located in the Writing Resources module.)

Discussion 2
eview the Learning Resources for Discussion 2 and respond to the following items:
1. Identify the common themes that cut across the codes of ethics for different social science disciplines.
2. Using the case examples provided in the learning resources, discuss why professional conduct is important in the social sciences. What are the potential consequences of violating professional codes of conduct both for the violator and those being violated?
3. How can one operate ethically in careers in the social science? What are some of the ethical challenges that you anticipate in your future career? How to do anticipate dealing with those challenges?
