The Expansion of Global Sexual Harassment
Some may be surprised to know that the implementation of laws prohibiting sexual harassment in the workplace is relatively recent, beginning with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the United States. The global workplace has followed with many countries writing similar sexual harassment provisions into the law. Recently, global protection from sexual harassment has evolved dramatically.
Over the past decade, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, as well as other countries have all passed provisions to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. Indeed, Israel fairly recently expanded its sexual harassment law to include photographs, videos, or recordings published without consent. Moreover, the former President of the country, Moshe Katsav, was sent to prison for sexual misconduct he engaged in while in high office. Japan has passed legislation to provide special counseling to victims of sexual harassment. Singapore, in the year 2020, enacted legislation broadening criminal protections in this area. Thus, although the United States was perhaps the first country to directly protect employees from sexual harassment in the workplace, this is now a right that employees can expect globally.

The Horse Place is a retailer that sells horse tack (saddles, saddle pads, bridles, reins, etc.) and supplies (grooming products, vitamin supplements, leg wraps, etc.). The Horse Place has 15 stores in the southern part of the United States. Its promotional strategy relies upon online advertising, social media advertising, and print ads in publications such as Horse and Rider, Horse Illustrated, and Dressage Today.
The Horse Place sells exclusively in the U.S. domestic market. This is also where its suppliers have traditionally been located. However, the retailer’s owner, Mary Jones, has recently begun sourcing from suppliers in India. She considers their products to be of excellent quality at about half the price of the domestic vendors.
The interaction with Indian vendors prompted Mary to consider selling her merchandise in foreign markets. She believes other countries have a demand for the kinds of products carried by The Horse Place. A cursory analysis of secondary sources resulted in the conclusion that Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom represent the most promising opportunities.
Mary decided that she would continue using her current promotional tools, while also developing a company website through which sales can be conducted. However, she knows this will not be enough to achieve a high level of sales. She realizes that selling to international markets requires her to use new channels of distribution. Mary must decide between using an indirect strategy or a direct strategy for the foreign markets.

Is it possible for an American car to be more American than the Jeep Patriot? Joseph B. White writes that no other vehicle “says American more proudly than Jeep, the rugged brand that helped America win World War II.” However, according to White, there could be a more American sports utility vehicle than the Jeep Patriot: the Toyota Sequoia, which is 80 percent “domestic” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In contrast, the Jeep Patriot is only 66 percent domestic. So, what defines an “American” car, or what defines an “American” car company?
The car industry transcends national boundaries. When one considers the “domestic content” as defined by NHTSA, cars or trucks sold by “Detroit” automakers, such as Chrysler, Ford, or General Motors, could be less American than cars or trucks sold by “Japanese” companies, such as Toyota, Honda, or Nissan, despite that they all own and operate major components and assembly plants in the United States.
According to Thomas H. Klier, an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and James M. Rubenstein, a Miami University professor, the distinction between “American” and “foreign” vehicles is not so clear: some models produced by the American-owned “Detroit Three” carmakers have a smaller share of domestic parts than models produced by foreign-owned carmakers. In 2006, approximately 25 percent of parts used in vehicles assembled in the United States were imported, and an equal percentage were produced by U.S.-based operations of foreign parts makers. Klier and Rubenstein add, “Against a background of global supply chains, it has become quite difficult to identify and label products such as autos by nationality.”
