What you need to do
This task is to build upon prior reflections from your learning activities and course experiences and write a reflection in response to your communication skills learning over the duration of the course. You are required to reflect on multiple experiences that have been significant for you (unlike the first written reflection in the course, where you explored your response to one experience only).
This is not to be a cognitive journal that evaluates ‘how well you have done’ in your application of communication skills and tells that you now are better at open questions etc. (although this might come out in the context of attending to your affective domain). The goal is to pay attention to your development through your feelings and responses in learning moments and consider how these align with your values and what this means to you as a physician in training.
This will also differ from your first reflective assessment in that you may apply the NMA cycle several times and then synthesise your new awareness from your “Action” stages of the cycle to give you a broader new understanding of how your values system are guiding your professional practice.
Some prompt questions to guide your thinking:
Think about the experiences when you have had the strongest responses. What did you learn from these and how do you think differently?
What is the thing that surprised you the most and why?
Are there any constant threads that you noticed across the weeks? What does this mean for your practice and lifelong learning?
How are you personally embodying the Health Charter core values within your daily practice as a medical student with increasing exposure to clinical experiences (From Topic 5.1)
How is your understanding of what matters to you different from when you began the course? Or you could explore if it is the same and why.
Is there something that you know now about yourself and that you wish you had known when you started? Do you now take that for granted? What has contributed?
You may consider your response to the reflective process and the requirement to write, and what this means for your professional practice.
Other Reminders:
This is to be an honest exploration of your emotions and responses, however, keep in mind that any disclosure of personal information will be read by the marking academic.
Your level of affective reflection will be evaluated against the rubric attached. You are NOT evaluated according to your emotional responses.
Please embrace all aspects of your emotional responses and consider celebrating positive moments as well as those you may have found challenging.
Please write in first person (I statements).
