Consider the following scenario:
You have a student in your classroom that has been struggling. The student has been provided some interventions, but the school administrators and specialists feel that the student continues to need interventions through the RTI* process. The parent wants the student to be evaluated to determine if the student qualifies for special education. *Please note: In Delaware, we are moving to talking about MTSS versus RTI. In terms of academic supports, these two concepts are very similar.
In approximately two pages, using APA formatting, explain the special education referral process to the parents. Although districts cannot deny evaluations, what would you say to the parents to try to encourage and support the schools thoughts on continuing interventions? How much time should be allowed and what data should be used to determine if the team should move to evaluating the student?
