Select a natural or intentional event which has public health consequences. The event I chose as a public health consequence is the COVID-19 pandemic. Please put everything in the context of emergency management and the four phases in its cycle – Preparation, mitigation, response, and recovery. Please include a brief description of each phase and how it was/could be used during COVID-19. Everything below should be included in the essay. Although COVID-19 affected the international scene, I’d like to have the U.S. as the primary research area and possibly include New York City as it was the first epicenter of the disease in the U.S. Also discuss the PPE/equipment shortage, hospital crowds, ambulance responses, the political landscape in the U.S. and how that affected the response to COVID-19. For the event you have selected, provide some relevant background information regarding the event and the type of disaster it represents. At a minimum answer the following: What agencies or persons served as the leaders for the response and recovery of the event? Who were the affected communities? What were the costs involved in response, recovery and what would it have cost to conduct mitigation strategies specific to the selected event? From a public health perspective, what are some of the most critical lessons identified? Do you think that the communities affected are better prepared if the same event were to occur today? What would you have done differently if you were the emergency manager during that event? How important (or not) were the roles and participation of the NGOs and volunteers. What innovative technology or methods could have been used that were not utilized? Are there any recommendations/suggestions that you can provide from your analysis of this event?
