Joshua ben Joseph grew up in the Jewish region known as the Galilee, which was in the Kingdom of Judea, a small part of the Roman Empire. We’ve taken a quick look at “Hellenism and the Jews,” (p 111-112) as an example of tensions in the second century BC resulting from the Covenant. On pages 165-166 we learn about the Jewish Revolt against Rome in 66 AD, during the Pax Romana. What was this Pax Romana? (pp 156-159) What do both of these examples inform us about Judaism and outside (of the Promised Land) power domination? Each example informs us about “Factors Behind the Rise of Christianity.” (pp 177-178) Please describe these factors.
How might we fit “The Life and Teachings of Jesus” (pp178-179, also Sources document 6-3 “The Sermon on the Mount”) into the condition and attitudes of Jews during His lifetime? When did He live on earth? Our movie (From Jesus to Christ) tells us about the Jewish sect called the Essenes, and how their writings (today we call them the Dead Sea Scrolls) help inform us about what Jews would be expecting from a Messiah. (defined p 178) Describe “The Spread of Christianity” and its “Growing Acceptance.” (pp 179-181; and Sources document 6-4: the Apostle Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians”)
