Discussion Post 1 : Prejudice and Discrimination Jane Elliott establishes a microcosm of a racist society. She gives the blue-eyed students the opportunity to experience the kind of treatment regularly meted out to people of color and others who are considered ‘different.’She identifies a group of people by a particular physical characteristic – eye color.
She discriminates against them and lowers her expectations of them.
She forces them, by her discriminatory treatment, to look and act inferior.
She blames their inferiority on their eye color.
“If participants can clearly see the negative effects of discrimination and understand the system that reinforces racism, they are more likely to change their own behaviors.” – Jane ElliottInstructions After watching the movie, “The Angry Eye” consider and respond to both prompts:Even when their blue-eyed colleagues were begin treated harshly none of the students in the ‘superior’ group challenged Jane Elliott or asked her to stop. Do you think that for the students of color was this was because of the recognition that such treatment, and far worse, is part of their everyday experience or is it just not wanting to buck authority?
The video encourages you to think about and to take responsibility for the part you, as an individual, can play in challenging racism and all discriminatory treatment. What can you, or do you, do to challenge discrimination?
