Writing your Interview Analysis (THIS is what you are submitting for HW #2) Please write a thoughtful essay response using paragraphs to address each of following: Introduction Briefly describe your social issue or topic in an interesting way. o What is compelling about your issue or topic? What social problem or issue exists that you want to take a closer look at?
What is your research question? Clearly state your thesis – what is your answer to the research question and what are you arguing using your interview data? Why does this topic merit study? Why should we explore this topic? How can your research be used? 2 -MethodologyThis section contextualizes your data gathering process. Describe who you interviewed and why. ***Be sure to change the interviewee’s name to protect their identity and maintain confidentiality.*** Describe the interview process – how did you arrange the interview, how long was the interview, what kinds of questions did you ask, how did you transcribe AND code the interview? This is also where you would discuss any problems or issues that may have occurred during the interview (i.e. recorder stopped working and you had to start over, interviewee became emotional or upset, had to end the interview early, etc.). Data and Analysis Select at least one interview quote and provide an analysis to support your argument. [See Sample Analysis of Interview Quote for an example.] Your analysis should be structured in the following manner: The first sentence should be your analytic point or topic sentence. In other words, what are you arguing by featuring this quote? Then set up the interview quote to provide a bit of background for your reader. (i.e. “When I asked Betty why she attend raves, she replied, …”) The quote itself should be indented and single-spaced. No quotation marks are necessary. Make sure that the quote reads clearly. Any thoughts/reflections and coded tags (i.e. text in parentheses) should not be removed. Length of excerpts can vary, but should be more than three lines and no longer than a short paragraph. Then follow up the quote with analysis. Clarify HOW the quote proves your point. To help build your argument, you should make reference to key words or phrases featured in the quote. Do not just re-summarize the quote! Rather, provide your own unique analysis of how this quote supports your argument. Tease out the implications and explore the nuances presented by the quote. The analytic commentary allows you as the author to drive home your point to the reader using the quote as evidence. Your homework response should be 2.5-3 double-spaced pages (12-point, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins).
