While developing my personal philosophy of teaching it is important that I articulate my personal beliefs about current educational theories and practices. My beliefs about education are complicated. On one hand I love the education system. It creates a road toward opportunity like no other. A person can start with nothing, become educated and eventually become a respected vital contributor to society. Wow, what a time to be alive! On the other hand, I do find that the education system is limited. The current education system caters to one learning style, and shrinks the confidence of those who do not thrive under that style of education.
The current practice of lecture and testing are not always telling in terms of who is the most intelligent of students. My teaching philosophy would be based on what is meaningful to me in my approach to teaching. I will be honest with you reader. I am not the best test taker, and I do not alway remember what I hear in lecture. However, I do remember what I see and feel. I can remember the faces of patients I had during clinical in the very beginning of nursing school. I can remember the look of the cadaver and the names of the preserved organs. If I close my eyes, I can literally taste the formaldehyde when I think back on that time. I will admit, I have never done very well on multiple choice exams. But if you ask me, I can explain the disease process, how it is acquired, and the best options for treatment.
The point I am trying to make is that every person learns differently. Some people thrive in the structured setting of the class room. Others find it off-putting and cold. Albert Einstein wast not the best student either. He said “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” I think the current education system focuses on successful scores, as opposed to valuable people in the field.
My personal experiences as a learner changed during clinical. “Clinical means involving direct observation of the patient.” (Halstead, 2016). This is hands on experience, and for me, it made all the difference. My interest in new types of teaching and learning are based on what people are good at. “A curriculum philosophy includes statements of belief about the goals of education, the nature of teaching and learning, and the roles of learners and teachers.” (Halstead, 2016).
My students should expect variety from me as a teacher. My curriculum would include personality tests that place student in areas where they will thrive. Short comings will be addressed and improved upon. In a society with a rapidly changing political environment and health care reform are now having a dramatic effect on the role of nursing faculty. (ANEF, K. 2014). Nurses need to become more specialized. My teaching strategies and methods include a curriculum that would assign nurses to study fields they are best equipped for. This specialization would result in more job satisfaction and job retainment. Different personalities thrive in different areas.
The personality test for nurses already exists. I would distribute the test to my student and place them in training for their specialized areas after general education was completed. The curriculum would be much like a doctor performing their residency. Specialized education in a specific nursing filed. As stated in the text, “diminishing resources, increasing public scrutiny, and heightened expectations place a heavy burden on faculty in higher education.” We no longer have the luxury for scared nurses in areas in which they do not feel comfortable nor appreciated. In order to determine if goals for students are being met there will be reports
from a panel of superior nurses in those specific areas. The superior nurses will be provided criteria that each student should demonstrate they have met as we’ll as an oral or standard test examination. The examination type will be determined by the filed in witch the nurse has been placed based on the previously taken personality tests. I hope this will create an engaging and enriching learning environment. With this teaching philosophy specific activities and exercises will be tailored to engage my students.
With this method of teaching, students will be enthusiastic about learning. They will become confident and proud of themselves. My concept of how learning occurs is when a person lights up about information they did not know before. This creates a hunger for more information, as well as the confidence in knowing they can intemperate and internalize information. In my opinion learning is best in the absence of fear and in the presence of excitement. My goals as an instructor would be to create nurses who love what they do, and provide help to those trying to figure out exactly what that is.
