Semester Research Paper: Parts and Their Functions
Your research paper should be about 2000-2500 words in length (five-to-seven pages). It should be spaced at 1.5 inches with 1-inch margins, left and right, top and bottom, with a readable typeface size such as 11 or 12 point. Make sure you include a topic heading with page numbers. You will want to use the APA style of writing and for identifying your citations and sources. Your report should be submitted as a Word document in Office 2007, Office 2010, or rich text format (rtf). Please do not submit Pages files, which your professor cannot open.
Name your files with your last name, first initial and assignment name, like so: MitchellC_NativeAdvertisingPaper.
At a minimum you should include four primary sections. These sections and their approximate length are:
1. Abstract/Introduction of Topic: no more than one page in total – worth up to 20 points
A good abstract/introduction consists of a brief, compelling presentation of the issue, question or problem driving the paper, followed by a thesis statement at the very end. Think of your this section as a blueprint of your paper. It presents the central issue and the viewpoint that the rest of the paper will support in detail.
2. Background Information and Opposing Arguments: approximately two pages in total – worth up to 25 points
In this section you should briefly present some background information that readers may need in order to understand and evaluate the thesis support. In addition, this section may include a brief discussion of views or arguments that run counter to the paper’s thesis, yet have some merit and are relevant to the central issue.
3. Thesis Support/Body: the bulk of the paper and generally runs from four to seven pages – up to 75 points.
This is the main part of the paper, all of the ideas, arguments, facts, examples, statistics and so forth that support the thesis.
4. Ending: no more than one page – worth up to 20 points
Either end with your strongest supporting point or develop an idea that underlines or expands your thesis support or strongest argument. Try to leave the reader with something to think about after reading your report.
5. Reference Page: worth up to 10 points
This is where you will identify all of the sources used for your paper. Be sure and use the standard APA format for your references. When incorporating ideas or language from outside sources they should be cited properly. This means that direct quotes should be indicated through the use of quotation marks or block quotes. All outside sources should be acknowledged within the text of the paper as well as within a reference page at the end of the paper.
