Establishing your doctoral identity allows you to assess how and why you are influenced and motivated to be present in your doctoral work. The more you know about yourself, the more agency you have in understanding what works for you, especially in being called to work autonomously for extended periods of time in conducting research, synthesizing content, and accomplishing writing deadlines.
Consequently, you also may draw upon this self-knowledge when navigating the intersectionality of your social work supervisor identity. The two can inform each other. For example, you might draw from what you learned about your doctoral identity and apply it to the necessary rigor required of you as a doctoral student.
In this Discussion, you will explain your doctoral identity and how it has impacted your success in the different stages of the doctoral process. Additionally, you will describe how your doctoral identity and experience might support your future success as a leader in the social work field.
To Prepare

What role does one’s doctoral identity play in engaging in autonomous research as a doctoral student?
How might one’s doctoral identity impact student success at the different stages of the doctoral process (e.g., course work, capstone/dissertation activities, identifying and utilizing needed resources)?
How might your doctoral identity and doctoral experience support your future success as a leader in the social work field? Aim to draw connections and make associations.
Describe what autonomous social work means to you.
Imagine you are in a leadership role. How would you support your staff/supervisees in developing confidence and competence to work autonomously?
Suggest at least two resources in addition to the resources provided in the Week 1 Learning Resources to help support doctoral autonomy, doctoral identity, or doctoral confidence, and provide the citation/s to these resources in correct APA formatting so that your colleagues can access them easily. State why you think these resources would be helpful.
