Choose two presentations of your classmates to constructively critique. Address issues such as:
Is the title a good one?
Does the abstract summarize the main features?
Was the problem clearly stated and referenced?
Were the research questions explicitly stated?
Is literature appropriately cited, was the conceptual framework/theory articulated?
Was an appropriate research design used?
Was the population defined?
Was their data collection methodology appropriate?
Did it include a section for results and conclusion?
Did the proposal discuss limitations for the study?
Were their suggested areas for future research?
Through your discussion, how can you help your classmates in their presentation? Is there something that could be more succinct or needs more explanation?

1.Understanding the effects of Lateral Violence on a Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit in a metropolitan city. A Phenomenological Review.
Abstract
Lateral Violence is a phenomenon the effects nurses today. Lateral violence can be described as “LV is disruptive and inappropriate behavior demonstrated in the workplace by one employee to another who is in either an equal or lesser position” ( Christie et al, 2014). Consequently, it can have negative effects on nurses mental and physical state, as well as their ability to give optimal patient care. In this study I will explore medical surgical/telemetry nurses lived experience of lateral violence. Using a phenomenological design 33 participants with various nursing experience and degrees were interviewed for this study. Data was gathered by doctorate level nurses with experience with clinical research. Results of data are to be reviewed.
Descriiption of Problem/Problem Statement
Lateral Violence (LV) is describes as LV as “ an act of aggression that is perpetrated by one nurse against another” ( Sheridan-Leos, 2008). Furthermore, behaviors can include non-verbal innuendo, withholding information, sabotage. It generally manifests in emotional and/or verbal abuse. Physical and emotional manifestation include nausea, depression, headache, anxiety, suicidal ideation post traumatic stress disorder, and onset of cardiovascular disease. “Nursing has been considered the primary occupation at risk for lateral violence. Studies estimate that 44% to 85% of nurses are victims of LV; up to 93% of nurses report witnessing lateral violence in the workplace” (Christie et al, 2014). Consequently, this phenomenon has become a significant issue in healthcare. This study will shed light on LV and how it effects a nurse’s well-being,

Understanding the effects of LV on a Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit
What is your definition of LV?
Have you experienced LV? Tell me about your experience?
Did anything trigger this occurrence?
What do you think about the phrase “ Nurses eat their young?”
How long have you been a nurse?
What is your level of education?
Who was the perpetrator? Manager? Charge Nurse?
Did you report the incident? Why or Why not?
How did it make you feel? Emotional or Physical Manifestation?
What is your hospital policy on LV?
Is LV the culture of your unit?
Are you happy at your job?
Have you ever bullied a co-worker?
Do you think LV effects patient care? Why or Why not?
Methodology
The study will be conducted using qualitative data design. Participants will journal their lived experience of lateral violence through journal writing, semi- structured interviews, questionaries, and researchers will observe, and document ant LV noted on the unit. My team members would include 2 researchers, all with doctorate level nursing degrees , with experience with clinical trial studies and qualitative and quantitative data collection. I would be the Principal investigator and will oversee the study. Sample size would include 33 participants, 30 medical surgical nurses 15 would be from each day and evening shifts. There would be 2 charge nurses from each shift and the manager of the unit. Participants would have no affiliation with the researchers. Participants would be recruited by flyers posted on the medical surgical unit, ads, and emails. Participation would be voluntary, and no monetary compensation would be given. Furthermore, informed consent would be received after researchers explained the study to participants. All interviews would be conducted in a private location, and participants would anonymously provide personal journal entries and questionaries in a designated locked area on the unit. No names would be used onn journal entries and questionaries. The study would take 2 months to complete. Interviews would be audio recorded and transcribed immediately after interview. Researchers would discuss and analyze the data. Researchers would take notes during interviews and discuss findings and impressions of participants. Journal entries would be analyzed and discussed as well. Researchers would be conducted to put aside personal beliefs and professional backgrounds.
Conclusion
Limitations to this study include researchers interpreting data incorrectly and the influence of personal bias. Participants could be apprehensive to be completely honest about their experience related to being reprimanded or judged.
“Lateral violence has been identified as a significant issue in nursing that has gone without focus consistent with its negative effects on the profession” ( Borg, n.d). Consequently, nurses are leaving the profession due to hostile work environments. As a result, patients are being affected directly. “Lateral violence in nursing jeopardizes the communication of critical information and collaborative decision-making, increasing medical errors, and leading to poorer patient outcomes” ( Bell, 2017),
Further research should be implemented to explore how to combat LV. As well as researching different units to explore if LV is more susceptible in specific specialties.
