The Intersection of Spirituality and Substance use amongst Older Black Adults is the title of this research. The study will examine the lived experiences of Older black adults who are either currently using substances or are in recovery from substance use. The experiences to be explored is the role that spirituality plays in substance use recovery efforts among Older black adults. This proposed research study will focus on Older Black adults that use or misuse substances for over one year either currently or in the past. Research has shown that there are specific systemic disparities and social determinants within the Black Community that causes depression, higher risk factors and minimal practices of seeking professional mental services (Noonan, Velasco-Mondragon, Wagner,2016). These determinants of healthy decision-making practices justify a need for a social justice approach to the field of social work practice aimed directly towards a resolution for this population. The aim of this study will be to identify the role that spirituality has in successful practices towards substance use reduction within the older black community. The goal in understanding the intersection of spirituality and substance use among older black adults can enhance and promote healthy living choices amongst older black adults. Post Traumatic slave syndrome ( with CRT included in that part) are the theories which to focus on for this assignment. OBA were at the margins of society that effect their access to treatment and . I want to understand the role spirituality plays on recovery since that is what people resorted to as a result of their lack of access to treatment.
