One way to analyze a Shakespeare play is by thinking about beginnings and endings. Are there parallels, contradictions, logical connections, patterns of any kind, repetitions, closure, or its lack? Your task this week is to ask these questions of Act 1, Scene 1, and Act 5, Scene 2. What is the relationship between these two scenes? Why do you think Shakespeare chose this beginning and this ending? When answering these questions I want you to be very specific about the things that you notice, the connections that you make, and what these things and connections mean in context. In other words, what do they imply about character, plot, symbolic meaning, etc? Do not forget to quote the text for evidence. As always, you do not have to focus on every aspect of these two scenes. You can instead focus on one or two salient connections but you have to talk about both together.
