EXTRA INFORMATION THE TEACHER GAVE:
Just as FDR used the new technology of radio to broadcast his “Fireside Chats” directly into the homes of the American public during the Depression, this same method allowed him to meaningfully communicate the policy and progress of the United States during the Second World War.
As FDR is broadcasting this “Fireside Chat” in April of 1942, things are looking grim for the United States. Despite a limited expansion of the US military following the outbreak of the war in Europe and Asia in the 1930s, the United States was woefully unprepared when the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US bases in Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7th 1941.
Now, five months after the attack, FDR addresses the nation to explain how the war will eventually be won. While the news from the Pacific and Atlantic was not particularly positive, FDR was sure of victory. His task, convince the American public of the same.
In this “Fireside Chat” FDR explains how this victory will be won and the harsh necessities required to do so.
