What is the IV? What is the DV?

July 20, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

Answer the questions based on the information presented in the attached PDF’S:
I am interested in the effect of computer use on lack of sleep. I gather 50 participants together and randomly assign them to one of five groups. The first group is instructed to stay off their computers entirely. The rest of the groups get varying amounts of time: 1 hour, 3 hours, 5 hours, and 7 hours spent in a day. Every day for a week I ask them to report how many hours they slept. I then take the average number of hours for each person.
1) What type of design (naturalistic observation, correlation, experimental) is this and WHY?
2) What type of design (between, within, matched) is this and WHY?
3) What is the IV? What is the DV?
4) Besides the amount of time spent on the computer, what else might you want to keep constant across the participants? Why?
5) What are the 3 conditions that must be met for causal inference to be made?
6) I observe that every time I play music in the living room, my cat comes in and licks her paws. What is wrong with my concluding that the music causes her to lick her paws?
7) I observe that sometimes when I eat cold food in the morning (but never when I eat hot food, and never when I skip breakfast) I get a tummy ache. What is wrong with my concluding that eating cold food causes me to get a tummy ache?
8) I observe that every time there is lightening, thunder comes after. What is wrong with my concluding that thunder caused the lightening?
Dr Sanborn-Overby is interested in how water consumption and temperature effect memory. To that end she randomly assigns participants to drink EITHER 4 oz, 6 oz, 8 oz, 10 oz or 12 oz and then complete a memorization task in EITHER a walk in freezer or in the sauna.
What is/are the IV(s)?
What is the DV?
How many levels for each IV.
What would be the notation?
How many different conditions are there?
If I need 45 datapoints for each condition, what would my total sample size need to be?

Dr Sanborn-Overby is interested in how caffeine, chocolate, and temperature effect mood. To that end she randomly assigns participants to drink a 15 oz beverage containing 10mg, 50mg, 100mg, or 200mg of caffeine on subsequent days and then EITHER eat a bar of white, milk, or dark chocolate in EITHER in a walk in freezer or in the sauna. Mood would then be measured.
