Culture and Art OverlapArt and culture are deeply intertwined, meaning that photography and culture are also deeply intertwined. Furthermore, photography and other artistic mediums are very intertwined in that they influence each other, and while photography is a type of art, it is also used to photograph art created with other mediums. Phew! Everything really is connected in this culturally artistic world! So, for today’s lab, you will be exploring the many ways that art, including photography, and culture overlap and intersect.

You will start by going online to explore art from a variety of different cultures and/or time periods. You can find a lot with a simple Google search using something like “art from different cultures/time periods,” but the following websites and videos might be helpful places to begin:Web Gallery of Art (an excellent index of artists that can be searched by culture or time period and then explore the art created by each artist)

Bradshaw Foundation – The Art of Altamira Cave
The Bradshaw Foundation – The Cave Paintings of the Lascaux Cave
The Met (an index of art that can be searched by region or time period—individual images of art can be clicked on for more information)
The Met – The Roman Mosaic from Lod, Israel

While the above links are excellent resources, feel free to also branch out and explore beyond these links on your own.Make sure that while you examine and explore art from various cultures, you are keeping in the back of your mind that you will select two specific cultures or time periods from history, at least one being a modern/more current culture, to further explore and examine in a slideshow presentation.Once you have become familiar with art from a variety of cultures/time periods, you will pick two cultures, one being a modern culture, to examine and analyze further.

In a slideshow presentation, identify, analyze, and explore the following as it relates to various works of art from each culture that you chose:What are some common and specific characteristics of this culture/time period’s artwork?

What can you learn about the ideas and features of this culture/time period by the way it defines and uses art?
Next, select three to six specific photographs/works of art and insert them into your presentation. Examine and analyze them, answering the following about each:Interpret and analyze this photo/work of art based on interpretation clues from the unit:Visual elements, composition, subject and context, history, genre and style, your response
