Addams, Jane; “Democracy and Social Ethics” Chapter 1 Only
King, Martin Luther, Jr.; “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
King, Martin Luther, Jr.; “The World House”
Discussion Questions:
1) Addams argues that democratic ideals are achieved by “mixing on the thronged and common road where all must turn out for each other” (218). What is the connection between democracy and social ethics, as Addams sees it?
2) In his “Letter,” King described civil disobedience as “expressing the very highest respect for law” (263). Why so? How does this relate to Socrates’ self-proclamation of being a gadfly to bite the horse from “The Apology” (71)?
3) All of our course readings have pointed out how easy it is to live unconsciously. How does Hannah Arendt’s theory of evil relate to King’s warning against complacency? What must we do to avoid such tragic outcomes?
4) In “The World House,” King argues that people who say they want peace, equality, and unity must be willing to “sacrifice” for it (288). He then goes on to say, “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it understands that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring” (288). What does King mean by this? How might “true compassion” require “sacrifice”?
