PURPOSE:
Welcome to Eagle Aviation Industries (a make-believe organization used for course simulations)! The leaders are excited to welcome you on board as an advisory board member. As you have noted through the orientation materials, your role as an advisory Board member is to provide guidance and expertise to Eagle Aviation Industries’ leaders. This first advisory Board Meeting requires you to think about how to assess organizational effectiveness as the leaders at Eagle Aviation Industries are working to develop initial goals and structures to help launch their company.
OVERVIEW:
Assessing organizational effectiveness reflects the complexity of organizations as a topic of study. Effectiveness is a social construct, meaning that effectiveness criteria are created and decided upon by people. Different people will have different criteria for what makes the organization “effective.” Leaders have to decide how they will define and measure effectiveness.
The leaders at Eagle Aviation Industries have called this board meeting to address the following questions:
– Briefly provide an overview of the goal, resource, internal process, and strategic constituents approach to measuring effectiveness.
– What is the best approach to measuring effectiveness?
– Describe the advantages and disadvantages of that approach?
– Provide an example of how it is used in an organization.
PREPARATION
Review the readings and other resources for this week. In light of your own experiences with measuring effectiveness in organizations, teams, groups, departments, etc… in particular, develop your initial “coming-in” position – your current view as to recommended approaches for measuring organizational effectiveness.
– Spell out in simple steps your argument that supports your belief.
– Then ask yourself, “How would I test, evaluate, or prove my position is correct or incorrect?”
– Think about how concepts and information you explored helped support your position.
