original Topic does not need a response, only need to reply to (2) peers response. Each reply should have a minimum of 50 words and have 1 reference in APA format.
Original Topic:
A depressed person attempts to commit suicide by taking a whole bottle of sleeping pills. The pills cause a drastic decrease in the pH. The patient starts having breathing difficulties because the thick and thin filaments within the respiratory muscles are breaking down.
[1] What is pH? Make sure to define what is an acid, base, acidosis, alkalosis, and buffer.
[2] What is the carbonic acid buffering system and how does it affect pH?
[3] Explain in depth the correlation between the person’s pH and why their respiratory muscles are breaking down. Is this acidosis or alkalosis?
Do not need to reply to original topic, reply to peers below.

Hello Class,
The term pH is commonly used in biology, agronomy, and chemistry. The word has been defined widely with several definitions by different people. According to chemistry, it is a scale used to stipulate the basicity or acidity of an aqueous result. Acidic elucidations are measured to partake slighter pH values than alkaline or basics solutions (Genetics Home Reference, 2020). The scale is logarithmic and contrariwise indicates the absorption of hydrogen ions in the solution. However, biologists define it as the equal of bases and acids in the blood at which the body functions superlatively. Also, it’s referred to as the balance of acid-base in the body (Genetics Home Reference, 2020). The human body naturally maintains health alkalinity and acidity. The kidneys and lungs perform a significant role in the process of acidity and alkalinity. Bases and acids prevalent chemicals which interrelate with each other causing the formation of water and salt (Silverthorn, 2018). Therefore acid is any hydrogen-comprising element that is proficient in contributing hydrogen ion or proton to another element, while the base is an iron capable of accepting a proton from an acid. Acidosis is the state of having excess acid in the blood fluids that is blood and causes the PH to range below 7.35 (Harper and Kinney, 2010). Alkalosis refers to a condition to have an excess base in the blood resulting in the body pH rising higher than 7.45. Buffer is a constituent that prevents a major change in liquefied pH by enthralling surplus or hydroxyl or hydrogen ions.
Carbonic acid is a component of the buffering system of blood. The carbonic acid, formed by bicarbonates, neutralizes the hydronium ions when the bloodstream is entered by an acidic substance (Silverthorn, 2018). Acids and bases change the pH of solutions, and buffers stabilize it by releasing hydrogen ions; hence when these ions are removed, they prevent the pH of the blood from being acidic.
The person’s blood is overly acidic because of excessive carbonic acid, resulting from much carbon (IV) oxide in the blood hence making the respiratory muscles break down (Silverthorn, 2018). Respiratory breakdown results from everything that affects respiration. When the blood is too acidic below 7.35, it causes respiratory acidosis, so the patient is acidosis.

Good Afternoon Professor and class,
The pH in humans is an acid-base balanced, which helps balance the levels of acid in ones body for better body functions. The lungs and kidneys are the major components in maintaining a healthy balance. The normal level of blood pH is 7.40 on a scale between 0 to 14, taking into consideration that a high pH level becomes to acidic. When the blood becomes to acidic it becomes acidosis, or the blood pH levels has to drop below 7.35. When the blood becomes to basic or the pH balance reaches levels above 7.45 it becomes alkalosis. When acidosis is caused by a lung disorder it is known as respiratory problems; when they are caused by a problem with the function of the kidneys this is known as metabolic. Their are different types of acidosis and alkalosis. For acidosis the most common respiratory ones are asthma, emphysema, pneumonia. Some of the symptoms to look for are “extreme sleepiness, fatigue, confusion”. Types of alkalosis within the respiratory system are hyperventilation due to anxiety, taking large quantities of aspirin, finally a high fever following pain. Some of the symptoms are muscle cramping along with twitching. A buffer is a solution that contain weak acids. The carbonic acid buffering system is what helps maintain a balance blood pH. This system is made up of carbonic acid, bicarbonate acid along with carbon dioxide. As previously mentioned a person pH balance is being monitored by our kidneys and lungs. Once they pH balance has been thrown off are kidneys and lungs start to experience organ failure. In turn oxygen wont be able to make it to our respiratory muscle which may lead to kidney and or lung failure if not attended quickly. This has more to do with the body’s acidosis.
