Essay question: Some scholars have argued that “the concept of [hegemonic] masculinity is flawed because it essentializes the character of men or imposes a false unity on a fluid and contradictory reality” (Connell & Messerschmidt 2005: 836). What is hegemonic masculinity, how has it been useful in understanding gender relations, and what, if any, are its limitations? NOTE: It is perfectly acceptable to supplement peer-reviewed sources with other materials (such as blog posts, newspaper articles, advertisements, etc.).
