What is an instructional objective?
In short, an instructional objective is the GOAL of your lesson/lesson plan. Instructional objectives are SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, and OBSERVABLE student behaviors towards desirable skills, attitudes, or knowledge.
Look at this chart from your textbook (figure 3.6). Notice where the instructional objective is on the chart. Notice that these objectives are “found in:” “Teacher Daily Lesson Plans.” That’s you! These objectives are part of a bigger, wider learning plan created by the school, district, and state.
There are different ingredients to create a well-written objective. First, you need to know the state standards for the grade level you teach. The standards answer the question, what does the state say your students should know by the end of that school year? You will also need to have an action plan. For this, you will need to review the video in this module about Bloom’s Taxonomy. Last, you will need to create a condition/activity. This is where you have creative freedom to use a best practice of teaching (review “condition statements” on page 96 in your textbook).
YOUR OBJECTIVE SHOULD ONLY BE ONE SENTENCE!
Before writing a specific, clear, and measurable objective, it is important to understand how to look up and use the state standards. For this assignment, you will complete the following:
1. Watch the following storybook reading of Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard. You will use this book as the reading content to write your objectives.
2. Look up standards for 1 reading skill, 1 math skill, and 1 other subject of your choice on the CPALMS website. *Make sure to choose Grade 2
3. Watch the video provided in this module about Bloom’s Taxonomy. This video will help you understand the verbs needed for writing a measurable objective.
4. Use EasyGenerator to create 3 instructional objectives using the information from the standard. YOU MUST USE THIS WEBSITE TO WRITE YOUR OBJECTIVE.
Below is an example of what you need to submit (you will do this 3 times 1 reading/ELA, 1 Math, and 1 other subject of your choice):
Grade: 2
Subject Area: Reading/ELA
Standard (found on CPALMS): ELA.2.R.1.1 Identify plot structure and describe main story elements in a literary text.
Your Activity/Condition: (think of an activity/condition that would help students learn this standard): EX. using a sequencing graphic organizer.
Objective (put it together in one sentence using the EasyGenerator website provided above): The student will identify the plot structure in the story Miss Nelson is Missing by completing a sequencing graphic organizer.
Verb used: IDENTIFY
Level of Blooms: UNDERSTAND (make sure to watch the Blooms video to complete this part)
