journal 9
For this week’s journal entry, you’ll have to develop 5-7 research questions that you will aim to answer in your Fact Sheet. You can find guidance for developing research questions on pages 7-9 of Module 5. Before attempting this journal, review this part of the module and come up and record your own research questions.
Now you’re ready to begin the journal!
In this journal, you will apply active reading strategies to:
Identify key sections of your research sources that answer your specific research questions
Make a written record of these sections so that you can return to them later to study more deeply and take detailed notes.
Here you’ll want to start recording where and how you’ll use your sources in your Fact Sheet. At this stage, you are creating a paper trail for yourself: when it comes time to read the sources in more depth, you’ll know which sections and pages to focus on and which parts of Fact Sheet they will help you write.
Create a word document for your journal entry and use the table below as a model to record the research questions that each source will help you answer and where to find these answers in the source.
Aim to complete a table like this for each of your 4-6 sources. This means you’ll make 4-6 tables like the example below.

journal 10 (please complete bonus)
This journal activity will give you some guidelines for taking notes that will ensure academic integrity and give you materials you’ll use to draft your Fact Sheet Assignment.
For this journal activity, you’ll take notes in a Word Document, which you’ll attach to this week’s journal entry. You only need to complete notes on ONE of your sources. If you’d like to complete a bonus journal for extra marks or to replace a missed journal, then simply take notes on a second source in the same document.
Follow the steps below to take complete and responsible notes on your research source:
Step 1: Record the bibliographic details for your source (title, author, year of publication, and URL).
Step 2: Use the guidelines for effective note-taking to take point form notes on your source’s most relevant ideas. Be selective: capture only the information that you need to answer your Fact Sheet research questions. Aim for one page per source. Don’t forget to include the page or paragraph number for all ideas drawn from outside sources.
Tip: As you are paraphrasing the most important ideas in your notes, you may want to make a note for yourself about where you would use the point or idea in your Fact Sheet.
Your Journal will be evaluated for completion and originality (paraphrasing ideas in your own words).
In sum, your notes should
Include a page of notes per source
Use point form
Use your own words
Record page or paragraph number
Avoid copying long quotes
Be selective: take notes only on the information that will help you write this fact sheet
journal 11
Step 1: Describe the topic, purpose of and audience for your fact sheet. Remember your audience should be workers who are affected by the issue or problem!
Step 2: List 5-6 section headings for your Fact Sheet in chronological order (the order that best complements your purpose and audience).
Step 3: For each heading, list the relevant research question(s) that you will answer in that section.
You can include the questions from Journal Entry #7 but you may have changed, dropped or added questions since then. Include the questions that have been guiding your research.
You can use the example below as a guideline, although you don’t need to organize yours into a table. You want to have all the information covered below, but choose an organization that makes sense to you.
