Original post instructions: As the healthcare industry experiences an increased demand for administrators/managers, it is necessary to ensure those serving in these roles have the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to accomplish the strategic goals of the organization. As you prepare to move forward in your career, what have you identified, (based on research) to be the necessary KSAs to be successful in this role? Describe the impact of successful healthcare administrators (based on research) in at least one organization (direct or non-direct care).

As a Healthcare administrator/manager it is necessary to ensure those serving in these roles have the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to accomplish the strategic goals of the organization. The knowledge, skills, and abilities that I was able to identify that are necessary for an administrator/manager to be successful within their organization have been the ability have Knowledge, Leadership skills, Interpersonal skills, teamwork, managerial ethics, professional development, cultural competence, and the motivation for continued learning. These were the current trends that I identified within my research. Knowledge Management which states according to a study that I was able to research stated that it is related to sustainability, organizational learning, knowledge transfer, quality of care and safety type of motivations, and barrier of all which will affect the level of service. According to the study having knowledge management can lead to a sustainable healthcare system and leaders can achieve the goals of their organizations. “Management and leadership of healthcare professionals are critical for strengthening quality and integration of care” There were different types of leadership listed that were stated to be necessary and that would be beneficial. Transformational, transactional, Autocratic, Task-oriented, and relationship-oriented leadership. Transformational leadership states that it typically can inspire confidence, and staff respect, and they communicate loyalty through shared vision resulting in increased productivity and strengthening employee morale and job satisfaction. Transactional Leadership is where the leader acts as a manager of change, making exchanges with employees that lead to an improvement in production. The autocratic Leadership style is considered ideal in emergencies as the leader makes all decisions without considering the staff’s opinion. Task-oriented leadership style involves the planning of work activities, clarification of roles within a team or group of people, objectives set as well as the continuous monitoring and performance of processes and relationship-oriented leadership style incorporates support development and recognition. Learning about the different types of leadership broadened my perspective on how necessary it is to have a vast set of skills and a level of open-mindedness to run a facility and manage so many different types of individuals and groups of people. Interpersonal Skills which was defined as “goal-oriented behaviors used in face-to-face interactions to bring about a desired state of affairs” (Hayes, 2002, P.3) They include specific skills such as communication, teamwork, cultural competency, and collaboration. (Halfhill &Nielsen, 2007, Nealy, 2005; Sakowski el al, 2020) as well as emotional intelligence ((Goleman, 1995, Halfhill & Nielsen, 2007) Communication was a trend in my research and an article stated that a “study suggests that healthcare administrators words and deeds should be consistent while interacting with their subordinates, as it leads to positive interpersonal relationship, which, in turn, lowers employee silence”. An administrator/Manager should be able to communicate policies, procedures and regulations effectively. Teamwork was another trend that I noticed as John Baio stated in an article “A true team player recognizes what needs to be done- and seldom seeks praise for picking up the slack”. Critical learning abilities such as conceptual, technical, and functional competency in general management and healthcare management; Managerial skills abilities; and experimental learning where one can apply the classroom theory to the real world within healthcare such as problem-solving and being able to be a self-starter and the ability to go above and beyond.

Business admin and operations lead a healthcare administrator to have a strong understanding of business principles to also be effective in meeting financial and productivity goals. Data Analysis and budgeting is other critical skill that is needed for every type of practice or hospital. It would help administrators plan for future expenses like new equipment, additional hires or emergency repair work. The ability to plan is another critical skill that is needed because the state and federal laws and regulations change constantly within healthcare. Health Administrators must be knowledgeable and industry standards and be on the front end of implementing changes also helping physicians and staff understand the flow of things. Which also falls under being able to communicate effectively. I was able to identify in a reading that most health management programs incorporate interpersonal skills in their curricula which I find to be very important and I look forward to learning and strengthening my skills in all of those areas as it would have a great impact on the employees , staff and patients as well. In the article that I read, a renowned professor by the name of Peter Drucker stated, “Hospitals are the most complex human organizations ever derived and the fastest-growing in all developed countries. Hospitals occupy hundreds of employees from various scientific fields, educational backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and occasionally different cultures, different groups of employees often have their regulations, perspectives, requirements, and accreditation, Still they have to interact, cooperate, share information, transform it into knowledge, and perform efficiently to provide high-quality services to the patients and their caregivers”. I feel that quote resonated with me as that is what I expected what healthcare administration would be like.
