The exam is open book and open note and does not have a time limit. However, please be sure to cite any outside sources you use (including McGrath). Using sources without citation is plagiarism and will result in a grade of 0 for the exam.

1. What does Martin Luther mean when he says that Christian faith has a personal, not a historical, reference?
2. Anselm argues that only the “God-Man” is able to bring about salvation. Why does he say Jesus must be both God and man?
3. What is the difference between a religion being “exclusive” and being “inclusive” when it comes to its relationship to other religious groups?
4. Choose one of the two sacraments we discussed in class (baptism or the eucharist). What does this sacrament symbolize? What does it accomplish?
5. In the debate over what makes the sacraments efficacious (effective), the two major sides are summed up by the Latin terms ex opere operantis and ex opere operato. Briefly describe the two sides of this debate.
6. What is the cause of evil/suffering in the world according to Plantinga?
7. Choose one of the Christological heresies we talked about. In what way did this group’s definition of Jesus’ nature fall short of the accepted Christian teaching (that Jesus is fully God and fully human)?
8. What does Christian theology mean when it calls God a “Personal God” (as opposed to an “Impersonal God”)?
9. We talked about four different ways that the church might be considered “one” (imperial, platonic, eschatological, and biological). Select one of these and explain what it means.
10. Choose one of the trinitarian heresies we discussed in class (Arianism, partialism, or modalism). Explain how it falls short of a proper understanding of the Trinity.
