How does this paper differ from Unit 1 and 2? In Unit 1, you were asked to create an interpretation of the text that you selected, focusing on the text itself. In Unit 2, I asked you to select a main text and a school of criticism, to center your critical reading of the text to the material itself. Unit 3 introduced non-traditional literary readings.  Unit 4 is asking you to now go beyond that by responding to both a primary text, Asterios Polyp, and a secondary text, one of the articles above. Your goal is to creative a critical argumentative response to one of the 4 articles, using critical theory (either the same one they use, if you can identify it, or your own), and create an argumentative thesis that explains your response to this combination of readings. You are not simply trying to write whether you agree or disagree with the authors, but instead looking to create a new reading based on your interpretation of the primary and secondary texts together; this is the process known as synthesis, one of our key concepts in ENC 1102.
You will need to read and understand the primary text first in order to respond to the secondary text; it is impossible to do otherwise. Your ability to quote, draw conclusions, and show evidence from BOTH sources are a major portion of this paper’s function.
What is the purpose of this assignment? Unit 1 asked you to interpret, Unit 2 asked you to analyze, and Unit 3 is now asking you to take information you are given and synthesize it for new meaning. This is less a paper about the primary text, as much as it is the conversation about the rhetorical goals of the primary text, and other people’s interpretations of it. Please note that the 4 supplementary articles are fairly long; you will need to learn the art of skimming, or reading quickly for specific detail; I do NOT expect you read ALL of the articles from start to finish!
