The structure of the essay:
1. what’s your topic and how do you feel about it?
2. what ways does it occur in your life? Tell me a story! my story is that my parents want me to obey to their rules and do an arranged marriage in arabic culture talk about that too.
3.what kinds of stereotypes may exist around it?
4. What are some of the traditional ways of thinking about it cross-culturally?
Who does it – for example:
1. which cultures?
2. males or females?
3. adults or children?
3. religions? social class?
4. do you think who does it has the potential to change over time (like how women’s roles change)
5. When has it occurred?
6. does it have a long or short history? Why?
7. might it change in the future? what about perceptions of it?
8. is it a global thing or do only certain people do it?
9. why do you think that is?
10. why do you think this came about?
11. what environmental/societal factors do you think may have influenced its expression?
you may speculate as to why a phenomenon exists, and you also must say why, historically
12. how is it perceived by insiders and outsiders (remember to include emic and etic). Why? Has it always been that way?
13. how do you perceive it? Has this perception changed at all since you first decided on this topic?
14. To what extent is your topic a cultural construct?
Rules:
1. the essay should have a HEADER describing the topic.
2. Start essays with a complete sentence introducing your topic, and then discuss the topic, wrapping it up in the end with at least one sentence about how it all relates back to cultural anthropology.
3. are required to be 600-800 words, with the word count noted on the top right of the page.
4. Be 600-800 words – no less than 600; can be a little bit longer – don’t go nuts, and make it way too long.
5. Start with a header and a complete sentence, letting me know which specific topic you’re going to comment about.
6. Provide thoughtful statements or commentaries on the topic (consider bringing in outside information, research, or sources to support the essay.
7. Include citations/references if needed MLA form
8. Cannot Lack substance, original ideas, thoughtful commentary, or are judgmental/rude
9. Cannot be too much like a term paper, and less like a critical thinking essay
10. Cannot be too short or too long
11. Cannot Suffer from poor grammar/spelling
