1) What are some of the overlaps between the anti-psychiatry movement and the social model of disability? What are some of the differences? How do you think these movements might inform each other in future disability justice and mad movement activism?
2) The anti-psychiatry movement and the experimental communities of Villa 21 and Kingsley Hall occurred during a specific historical period that was highly radical and free of many bureaucratic and political restrictions we currently have. Yet, we have seen a strong surge in political activism in the past decade, including the Black Lives Matter movement and the indigenous rights movement Idle No More. How do you think current mad activism might intersect with these movements? What specifically can we learn from the activism of the 1960’s and 70’s (i.e. anti-psychiatry, civil rights, black power, women’s rights, and disability rights) in generating coalitions in current mad activist movements?
