For your first essay assignment, you will write a 4-page essay (double spaced) on the topic below. Topic: What is your view of psychological wellness and illness now that you have read several of the case studies presented by Dr. Sacks? What are some different ways you are thinking about mental health issues? In your essay, refer to two patients (from two different assigned chapters) in the case studies of Dr. Sacks. Use/analyze their conditions to show how your views are being shaped anew in different ways about what it means to be psychologically healthy and “disordered.” Include some of the lecture material on perception and reality as well for a fuller, more developed paper (and a higher grade). The best grades will go to those essays that show thoughtfulness, seriousness, and a clear understanding of the reading and lecture material referenced, as well as a polished prose free of grammatical and mechanical mistakes. Your paper must be typed in APA style (see the APA resources, including sample student APA essay, on Canvas, under the “Files” link, and your text Rules for Writers). You must include an abstract and keywords, as well as a title page. You must also use a minimum of five in-text citations and at least one scholarly source outside of the Sacks text; all quotes and paraphrases should be introduced with signal phrases and meaningfully commented on and analyzed. Underline your thesis statement, which should appear within your first paragraph. See rubric for grading guidelines.
