Socio-Economic Factors and Their Effects on the Rise of Narco-cultures and Drug Trafficking
Discuss how neoliberalism, globalization, and capitalism have all contributed to the expansion of transnational organized crime (TOC), including drug trafficking (DT) as well as to the development and expansion of Narcocorridos (narco-cultures). What are some consequences of neoliberalism (e.g. reference to economic failure, economic strain, unemployment, income inequality, structural inequalities, political instability, rise in corruption) on DT? How have factors such as poor socio-economic conditions, strain, police corruption and/or political instability led to the presence, popularity, and influence of narco-cultures (and thus drug trafficking in general)? More specifically, why would one argue that the “Robin Hood” archetype that has contributed to the rise in drug trafficking can be accredited to social, political, and economic conditions present in countries such as Mexico, for example? Elaborate on the effects of various socio-cultural, political and economic factors on the rise and continuation of drug trafficking in a specific country/region. Make references to the assigned readings and provide clear examples/ref to studies.
