According to the text a psychological illness could be triggered by any one incident or it can develop due to genetic predisposition. It also stated that diagnoses can be different in different countries, however, the book that states the requirements to be diagnosed with a mental illness comes from the United States and Western culture. That being said there are scientific studies to show that these illnesses are not just cultural but actually rooted in brain chemistry, for example with serotonin’s effect on depression. According to a study done on serotonin levels and depression, it was observed that serotonin levels and dopamine levels can affect depression by causing aggression and putting the individual at risk of suicidal ideation and suicidal risk. Not only was this observed as a risk of the measured serotonin levels but it was observed as a significant risk. With the science to back up the diagnosis of major depressive disorder in regards to aggression and suicidal tendencies, it is potentially harder to ignore as a real illness in other countries.

How do biological, psychological, and social-cultural factors interact to produce specific psychological disorders? Consider disorders such as eating disorders in Western cultures, Amok in Malaysia, Susto in Latin America and Hikikomori in Japan.
Within an article titled “introduction health psychology” (2021) it discuss is that many things are viewed using the biopsychosocial model. Within this model it views “health and illness as the product of biological characteristics (genes), behavioral factors (lifestyle, stress), in social conditions (family relationships, social support)”. another article titled “psychological disorders” (2020) discusses that the “specific causes of psychological disorders are not known”, but that there are many contributing factors downstairs it then goes on to discuss “chemical imbalances in the brain, childhood experiences, heredity, and stress”. lastly there was a study done by Schneider et al (2016) that discuss is the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors contributing to the drive for muscularity in weight training men. It discusses that “muscularity is growing in importance for men in western societies”. the problem with this, is that it is growing in extreme forms an creating body image concerns as well as harmful behaviors, such as “overexercising and the misuse of performance enhancing substances”. It is leading to things like “disordered eating and muscle dysmorphia”. during this study they took into account biological factors like age, psychological factors like self-esteem and physical attractiveness and sociocultural factors like the media’s view of the ideal body image.
Thankyou,
Danielle
