Fredrick Douglas questions:
What affected you the most deeply as you read this account?
What offended you the most?
What made you the most ashamed?
Journal Format Instructions from teacher:
One way of responding to what you read is to write about it. We will use the Journal
Module to do this. You should write 300-400 words for your journal response, unless it
takes more words than that to fully answer the question.
Include a word count for just your response.
Include the author’s name and the page number from the text in
parentheses to cite the quotes. If the primary work is online, simply put the author’s
name with no page number.
It is important to remember that you do not have to agree with me, or anyone else, for
that matter, in your interpretation of what you read. You MUST, though, support your
own ideas with specific references to the text and quotes from the text to support your
assertions.
Your response should contain quotes from the poem or short story to support
your ideas. This is really, really important. Also, be sure to cite the source
correctly. To cite the source, you should include the author’s last name and page
number of the selection. If you access the source online, use the URL. Here is an
example if you are using the text: (Smith 34). And here is an example using an
online source:
http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/declaration_transcriipt.html
Your grade will suffer greatly if you don’t include quotes. In fact, the best grade you will
be able to earn on a journal is half credit if you do not use sufficient quotes to support
your ideas. These quotes should be woven smoothly into your own sentence. See the
example below for how this is done.
I will be very particular about journal responses. If you do not follow my directions
exactly you will lose points. I have included, at the bottom of these directions, the most
common mistakes students make that cause them to lose points. Make sure you have
NOT done these things.
I will make general comments about your work for each journal. If you wish to talk
about your grade or how to improve, I am always happy to meet with you, virtually or in
person.
Journal Entry Assignment
When the assignment calls for a journal entry, you should do the following:
Go to the Journals Module. You will see all the journal topics.
Find the correct journal topic and click on it.
You will see the question. Do not compose your response in the box.
Compose your response in MS Word. This allows you to check for spelling and other sorts of errors.
Formatting of journal:
Use Arial 14-point font
Use double spacing
Include a word count at the end of your entry.
When you have completed your journal in MS Word, go back to the journal
question.
Click on Start Assignment
Copy and paste your response from MS Word into the response box in the
journal assignment.
Click on Submit Assignment to submit your response.
You will follow this procedure for every journal response.
