Management in Healthcare I
Discussion Topic
This week’s topic focuses on the issue of supervision–what it is, why some people become supervisors, and the various roles supervisors must undertake in order to be effective.
For this week’s discussion forum, do the following:
- Review the Power Point Presentation for Week 3 titled The Nature of Supervision.
- Consider the following scenario and respond to the questions that follow:
Jessica has been an administrative clerk in a pediatric office for the past five years. She was recently promoted to the position of supervisor and will be responsible for overseeing a staff of five clerks. Immediately after the staff meeting at which her promotion was announced, Jessica was surrounded by several of her coworkers, offering congratulations.
“Great news,” said Lily, “but does this mean you’re no longer part of the carpool? I don’t think your hours will be the same as ours anymore.”
Another co-worker, Sabrina, said, “There goes the lunch club! Management commitments, don’t you know.” Jessica detected a slight sarcastic edge to Sabrina’s comment about management, but decided not to respond.
Debbie said, “Congratulations, Jessica. Maybe now we can get someone to listen to us. Don’t forget, you used to complain just like the rest of us!”
The last of the group to speak, Mary, said, “Complaining has been a way of life around here. I don’t think the old boss ever passed our concerns up the line. Maybe now that Jessica’s in charge, let’s hope she doesn’t forget who her real friends are.”
Following a rather brief, but awkward, silence the group broke up and everyone returned to their work stations.
Questions:
1) What advantages might Jessica enjoy now that she will be taking over as supervisor for this group of which has long been a member?
2) What disadvantages might Jessica face being a supervisor to her friends?
3) If you were in Jessica’s position, what approach would you take in attempting to change your relationship with this small group of friends?
