I have learned that criminals are being released from long prison sentences, because of the updated technology forensic science. The evidence collected by forensic scientists is the backbone of a case. If done right a convicts is 100% certain. So, I would say criminal profiling leans more to discovery that is more of a science. Science is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained. Criminal personality profiling is a technique for identifying the major personality, behavioral, and demographic characteristics of offenders based on an analysis of their crimes. This can be different from the clinical personality profiling done by mental health professionals during clinical and forensic practice. The following question will address effective profilers are highly trained, experienced investigators. Crimes that lend themselves to the most detailed profiles are often those that are part of a series of similar crimes. It’s often easier to profile unusual crimes, particularly those with signature characteristics, behavior prints, or signs of staging, than more common violent crimes. Small profiling team is the most productive approach to the profiling process. The scientific status of profiling depends on the reliability and validity of the various types of forensic-science core knowledge used by the profiler, the reliability and validity of the violent crime database, and the reliability and validity of the profiling process itself. Both forensic psychiatrists and criminal profilers need each other to compete a case that will hold up in a court of law. Forensic psychiatrists can perform clinical interviews for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment, and courtroom competency/sanity assessment, they cannot do the work of a criminal profiler. A psychiatrist can contribute to the criminal profile but is only one member of a team. The same can be said of law enforcement agents, psychologists, sociologists, medical examiners, and detectives. Far more advanced training is required to become a professional criminal profiler, training that has heretofore been nonregulated.
There should be a required certification to become a profiler. They should obtain a bachelor’s degree for starters in psychology and continue to work towards a master’s degree. Concentration should be human behavior, interview skills. They should continue to train in forensic science, victimology, and crime science analysis. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) requires its criminal profilers to complete the FBI’s formal training at its academy. The standards should be across the board when it comes profiling, and all law enforcement should meet the standard that the FBI is required to do. This should be a no brainer when it comes to the lives of someone who has been charged with a crime. History has shown us that investigated law enforcement is not perfect. Hundreds of innocent people have gone to jail, because of poor investigating. Training program and education requirement will help reduce lots of mistakes by less experience law officers. Has stated earlier this should start with learning in police academy and continue to higher education capping off with a PH. D in criminal law.
