Lawmakers often have a desire to legislate ethics, as shown by the creation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Research the legal mess Worldcom, Enron, or HealthSouth created for themselves and discuss the following:
1. Was the creation of the Sarbanes-Oxley bill a necessary step to legislate corporate ethics, along with the burden of regulatory requirements it brings to prove compliance? Will it keep people from violating the law just because it is illegal, or will individuals decide to do what is right whether it is against the law or not?
2. Consider how law, ethics, and morals fit into the aviation industry whether it be as a flight crew, mechanic, controller or manager. Conduct an Internet search for ‘aviation code of ethics’ and select one organization you think is the best for your area of aviation, explain why, and which particular ethics item you think is the most needed in the industry.
