Wattpad.com is an online community where individuals can read, discuss, and share stories written by other members. Wattpad is an example of a participatory culture, a place where individuals can become producers of media. Please refer to our course readings for more information about participatory cultures.
For this assignment, you’ll visit the website wattpad.com, explore its contents, participate in the community activities, and write a report of your experiences.
IMPORTANT: Wattpad.com stories sometimes contain adult themes.
Assignment instructions
Step 1. Read something new
Visit the wattpad.com website. You can access the website from the “Visit the Website” link below.
Register for the website (it’s free!). You can use your gmail account or Facebook account, or you can sign up with an another email account.
When you login, you will be presented with reading choices. You can search for a topic you’re interested in reading about or you can choose from the ones presented to you.
Read stories that have been written by other community members. Contribute to the community. Engage! Enjoy!
After you have explored the website and read something new, return to this assignment page to complete the next part of this assignment.
Step 2. Write about it
After you have done “fieldwork” in the website above, you will write about your experiences. The essay does not have to be in a typical essay format. You can simply address the 5 prompts listed below:
A description of what you learned or read about. You should include the following:
Subject/Topic (s)
Some interesting facts you learned or story plot you read about.
A description of how the content was delivered. You can complete this task by answering questions such as the ones provided below (it’s not necessary to answer all of the questions):
Was it the content delivered through videos? Powerpoint slides? Etc.
How was the content organized?
Are students (users) allowed to navigate freely through the content? Or are users required to follow a set a path of learning?
Reflection of your experience. The focus should be on how fieldwork experiences inform or augment your understanding of educational technology, especially through the lens of the assigned readings for the week
A description of how you would use the website for a class you might teach in the future.
A question for other members of your group. The question should make connections between the course content and the website.
