The first goal of securing physical evidence from a crime scene is to secure the scene. The mentality of the first responding officers must be to seal off the scene and not allow any contamination, and detailed documentation of anyone that would enter the crime scene during and after it has been declared as such. This could involve taping off the crime scene, barricading the crime scene with more obvious barriers and sending the message that it is a protected crime scene.
Detailed records should be kept of anyone individual that has entered and left the crime scene after it has been declared as such.
The next step is to document the crime scene. This can be done by various methods. This could include the spiral method, the zone method, the grid method, photographing, or sketching the scene. All of these methods involve a miticuoulous method of documenting evidence and recording. This involves meticulous attention to detail and ensuring that nothing is missed. This point of the investigation is critical to a case when it goes to court.
The next step involves collecting physical evidence. This could include any type of evidence such as blood, fibers, fingerprints. Etc.
After the physical evidence has been collected, the technician will want to document and label each piece of evidence with detailed information such as when, where, and who collected it.
After evidence has been collected there will need to be a documented chain of command. As the evidence is passed to a new individual, it will need to be documented in detail as to who handled the evidence and what they did with it.
After evidence has been collected there should be final documentation of what was collected and the details surrounding the entire investigation.
It is essential to an investigation that officers follow the same protocol for securing a crime scene and evidence collection. This ensures the integrity of the evidence and procedures when they are presented in court.
