Firstly, you will undertake your research: you will explore a range of typologies of collective life (listed below), and following this you’ll select one typology to focus on. The focus on a singular typology will allow you to explore the theme of collective life with more depth and focus by attending to only one typology.
On deciding upon your preferred typology, you will, in discussion with the module leader, agree two specific examples which you will refer to throughout the essay and drawings.
Assignment: part 1 – the Essay
The essay will be approx 3500 words in total including a 300 word abstract. Two main examples should be identified in advance and agreed with the module leader, but these can be complemented with other minor examples.
An example structure for the essay is as follows:
• Write 1000 words explaining the first example, explaining the ideas, aspirations and success of the design / architecture / situation for enabling collective life.
• Write 1000 words explaining the second example through similar terms.
• Your final 1000 words should convey your knowledge and understanding of relevant theory in relation to these two examples. To do so you should contrast the two sites, explaining them with particular attention to one chosen theme or theoretical approach. Examples of themes include; Agency, Activism. Critical urbanism; Economic systems (post-Fordism or Neoliberalism for example), Scale, Character, social class, inequality, race, gender, gentrification, the commons, indigenous collective practices.
• The remaining word count will be taken up by the Abstract, Introduction and Conclusion.
This will be an analytical essay, containing some introductory descriptive information, but with focus largely on synthesis of ideas drawn from your own reading on the subject matter. In order to produce a well researched and synthesised analytical essay you must read the suggested texts and beyond.
The essay must be a rigorous academic text, written clearly and with reference to existing academic literatures.
