1. Think of Walter Lee’s lines in the first act of the play which are directed toward his wife; for example, consider the lines, “That is just what is wrong with the colored women in this world…Don’t understand about building their men up and making ‘em feel like they somebody.  Like they can do something,” and “We one group of men tied to a race of women with small minds.”  Think about the three main women in the play: Mama, Ruth, and Beneatha.  How do racism and sexism mirror one another in the play?  In what ways are these two systems of oppression displayed as similar, and in what ways different?  You may also want to think outside the confines of the play and do a historical reading of the same question in the decades surrounding its authorship.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Essays should be approximately 4 – 5 pages long (double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman) and documented according to MLA, 9th edition.  Be sure to consult your Essay Checklist!
2. You will need to find and use at least 2 outside library sources as additional evidence to assist in proving your thesis.  Do not use any websites or AI programs for your  information.
3. When proofreading, apply the comments you received on your previous essays to be sure not to repeat the same mistakes.

* Format those sources according to the MLA Handbook, 9th edition.  Then, integrate those sources into a master list, and be sure to double check your formatting!

Specifications for Essays: Checklist
___ 1.  Papers must be typed or computer-printed on one side only of white, 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper (no other color but white).
___ 2.  Type should be in 12 pt. font only; the standard font is Times New Roman.
___ 3.  Essays should be double-spaced and should observe standard margins (approximately one inch on all sides).  There should be no extra spaces between paragraphs.  Do not justify on the right margin.
___ 4.  Pages must be joined with a staple in the upper left-hand corner.  It is your responsibility to provide the staple!  No paper clips, tape, or binders!
___ 5.  On page one, type your name, the name of the course, the instructor’s name and the date the paper is due on four lines in the upper left-hand corner.  This is your heading.  You should nothave a separate cover sheet.
___ 6.  In the upper right hand corner of successive pages (2 and beyond), type only your last name, a comma and the page number. (no “p” or “page”).  It should look like this:

___ 7.  Every paper should have an interesting title (which is different from the title of the story, article, etc.)  This title should be centered (in regular upper and lower case) three spaces above the first paragraph.  Do not put the title in all caps; do notunderline it, italicize it, put it in bold face or quotation marks, and do not put it in any larger or different font.
___ 8.  When you write about writing, fiction, or film, use only the present tense.
___ 9. When you use any outside secondary materials, you mustdocument your use of these materials by using full, double quotation marks and referencing the source both in in-line citations and on your Work Cited page.  Consult the MLA Handbook for proper format of in-line citations, block quotes and the Work Cited page.
___ 10. Essays should be carefully proofread and revised – both on the screen and after they are printed.  The instructor should not be the first person to read the essay in its final form! 
IMPORTANT:  If you have Spelling and Grammar Check programs, use them, but don’t rely on them to be one-hundred-percent thorough or reliable.  Read your essay aloud to someone else; have someone read your essay to you.  Correct all errors before turning in the final draft!
