Use-of-Self Definition: For the
purpose of this paper, Use-of-Self is
defined as: “Melding the
professional self of what one knows (training, knowledge, techniques) with the
personal self of who one is (personality traits, belief systems, and life
experience), a hallmark of skilled practice.”

Students will submit a written self-reflective essay that
describes their personal approach to clinical social work practice. Students
will describe how theories studied in this course align or diverge from their
personal practice approach. Students will reflect on how their intersectional
identity, personal values, experiences, and beliefs inform their theoretical
preferences and their clinical approach to practice.
What was studies in this course: Personal Center
Therapy, Motivational Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Gestalt Therapy,
Psychoanalytic Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Intersectional Identity: I am an African American
Women 55 years old identifies as cisgender, religious, married with 3 children
and 5 grandkids. I was born in Louisiana,
did 10 years in the military, and lived in several places before myself and my
husband settled in Pearland, TX. My
interest in social work is trauma, working with veteran, abuse women and at-risk
adolescents.
