Multiple theories can impact the practice of nurses in every specialty and role. Though many theorists have impacted my practice as a clinic nurse, I have chosen to discuss Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Discuss the type of the selected nursing theory according to scope (meta-theory, grand, middle-range, or practice theory) and purpose (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or prescriptive).
Maslow’s needs theory is likely most often considered a middle-range theory. The model is specified in this way because it encompasses a broad theoretical view of the concepts but can also be applied to more narrow topics, even as narrow as specific patients and their needs. Though Maslow’s hierarchical theory was created with a psychological perspective in mind, it applies equally to nursing practice.
Provide an example of how the selected nursing theory can be applied to your area of practice. The example should include core concepts of the theory and demonstrate its practical application.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory defines the order in which a patient’s needs must be addressed. The pyramid-shaped image often shown to explain the theory shows the building blocks of human needs, starting at the most concrete need for survival and progressing upward toward the more abstract concepts of self-esteem and self-actualization. This pyramid model provides a visual aid to understand the theory’s concept of the need to meet human needs in a specific order.
In my clinic setting, I use Maslow’s theory daily. Patients who come to be seen by our physician typically present with a physiological need. In our case as an orthopedic service, most of these needs are bone fractures or other musculoskeletal issues. We must first treat this physical ailment by attending to the physiological needs. However, after we have addressed this issue, we must remember to take into account the higher pyramid categories. Patients often face abstract psychological burdens along with their physical injuries. We must take the time to address these needs once the initial safety needs have been met.
Though the above example shows how Maslow’s theory affects patient care, the model can be applied in my practice in other ways. Catalina et al. (2020) published an article about the needs theory’s impact on healthcare workers’ satisfaction and performance, stating that meeting employees’ needs by following Maslow’s model can lead to improved performance and a higher quality of provided health services. As a nurse leader or manager, my role would be to not only address my patients’ needs but also to meet my team members’ needs accordingly so that the highest quality of care is delivered.
