The Institutional Review Board (IRB) has a significant role, especially in the context of research subjects. Its primary aim is to protect the ethical use of the participants, protecting the rights and welfare of the participants during the whole process of the research. This includes an assessment of advantages and disadvantages, ensuring that the subject is properly informed, and ensuring that confidentiality of the participants is protected. Schenker et al. (2021) research study is an example of an ethically conducted research which demonstrates the positive impact of ethical research. This study was conducted to determine the outcome in patients with a terminal cancer disease who received nursing-led palliative care regarding quality of life, symptoms burden and mood.
The ethical issues were one of the most important things in this study, and it carried out all the procedures in line with the norms of the ethics review committee. Proper informed consent was obtained; its goal was to ensure that all participants were completely clear about the nature and scope of the study, possible risks and benefits they could benefit from, as well as their right to withdraw from the process at any time at their discretion. Setting a hyperfocal on preventing any harm and creating a benefit as much as possible enabled the palliative care service to be a real advantage that increases patients’ quality of living without adding any risks.
Additionally, the confidentiality of the patient data was strongly guarded, which emphasized the need to implement those safeguards in the research that involves sensitive health information. The fact that the selection of participants was conducted fairly enough showed the study’s commitment to equity, and it guaranteed equal opportunity to everyone who takes part in the research to enjoy its potential benefits. Schenker et al. (2021) study is a key example of why IRB is so important. It shows the role of IRB in keeping ethical standards in research. With the implementation of strict ethical guidelines, the IRB supported the research while maintaining the rights and well-being of the participants; the example of this ethical research process is a vital lesson for medical research that is ethically sensitive to the health of the study subjects.
