TOPIC 2: BEST PRACTICES IN STUDENT EVALUATION OF NURSING FACULTY
Purpose: Analyze and synthesize best practices for faculty evaluation. Create a student evaluation of faculty survey/tool and submit it for peer and instructor evaluation.
Scenario: The chair of the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions has asked you to update the current faculty evaluation tool completed by pre-licensure nursing students. Each semester students evaluate faculty two weeks before final exams are scheduled. However, questions on the evaluation survey have not been updated in 10 years. During this time all course content has been placed in the Canvas LMS and faculty have transitioned to a “scrambled” or blended form of teaching that includes flipping the classroom.
Process
Read Chapter 18 in the textbook and review Tables 18.2, 18.3, and 18.4. Research best practices for faculty evaluation. Visit the Qualtrics website https://www.una.edu/research/assessment-and-institutional-effectiveness/qualtrics.html (Links to an external site.) (use your UNA ID and password to access Qualtrics). Explore the website. Click the “Help tab” which is located in the right hand corner and visit Qualtrics University to learn more. Using Qualtrics, create an electronic survey that is limited to 30 questions and includes evaluation of classroom and clinical teaching effectiveness. Do not use multiple choice questions in the survey. Instead, you will utilize at least two alternative styles of questions. For example, a matrix, and a slider (graphic or simple slider) or rank in order. The goal is to present the survey in a professional and updated fashion.
Include at the beginning of the survey a statement similar to this one: Effective teaching is a primary mission of the University of North Alabama Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions. Student evaluation of instruction provides the university and the instructor with feedback about your experiences in the course for review and course improvement. Your participation in the evaluation of course instruction is both strongly encouraged and highly valued. Results are strictly confidential, anonymous, and not available to the instructor until after final grades are released by the Registrar’s Office. Add instructional of informational text in the box above the matrix. For example, the following questions are related to the clinical effectiveness of your instructor. Click “distribute” the survey and obtain an anonymous link for your survey. Post this link in the Assignment comment box. Place your two references in the comment box as well.
