The metaparadigm concept of health plays a crucial role in nursing practice as it serves as the foundation for understanding and promoting wellness in individuals. Health is a complex concept that encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In my nursing practice, I have witnessed the impact that health can have on a person’s overall quality of life and their ability to cope with illness.
One nursing theorist who has provided a significant definition of health is Florence Nightingale. Nightingale believed that health was not simply the absence of disease, but rather a state of overall well-being that encompassed physical, mental, and social aspects. She emphasized the importance of creating a healthy environment for patients to promote healing and prevent illness. Nightingale’s holistic approach to health aligns with my own nursing practice, as I strive to provide holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of my patients.
Another nursing theorist, Jean Watson, has a slightly different interpretation of health. Watson’s theory of human caring emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit in achieving health and healing. She believes that caring for a patient’s emotional and spiritual well-being is just as important as addressing their physical symptoms. Watson’s emphasis on the importance of connecting with patients on a personal level resonates with my own nursing practice, as I believe that building trust and rapport with patients is essential for providing quality care.
In comparing Nightingale and Watson’s definitions of health, both theorists emphasize the holistic nature of health and the importance of addressing the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of well-being. While Nightingale focuses on creating a healthy environment for patients, Watson emphasizes the importance of caring for patients on a personal and emotional level.
In my own nursing practice, I strive to incorporate elements of both Nightingale and Watson’s theories into my care for patients. Recognizing the complexity of the human experience is an essential element of nursing care (Subrata & Phuphaibul, 2019). I believe that creating a healing environment is essential for promoting health and well-being, but I also recognize the importance of connecting with patients on an emotional and spiritual level. By combining these two approaches, I am able to provide holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of my patients.
